The General Hospital of Mexico "Dr. Eduardo Liceaga" (HGMEL) proudly commemorates 120 years of service to public health since its inauguration on February 5, 1905. This hospital has been a benchmark in medical care and training of professionals committed to the most needy population.
The general director of HGMEL, Dr. Alma Rosa Sánchez Conejo, emphasized that the hospital is not only a place of health care but also a breeding ground for talent that has given rise to numerous National Institutes of Health and medical specialties. During the 1960s, 75% of doctors in Mexico were trained at this institution. With 85 specialties, HGMEL continues to be a training center for doctors from Central America, South America, and the Caribbean, graduating 380 specialists annually.
On its 120th anniversary, Dr. Sánchez Conejo called for the celebration not only of the hospital's history but also of its present and future, promoting innovative strategies to improve medical care, scientific research, and the training of health professionals. Under the leadership of Dr. David Kershenobich, the Ministry of Health is collaborating on a project to renovate and modernize the hospital facilities in order to improve medical care for the most vulnerable population.
In 2024, HGMEL recorded more than 800,000 consultations and nearly 34,000 surgical procedures, with an emphasis of 62% on high specialty. Significant transplants were carried out, including 52 liver, 29 kidney, 27 cornea, one heart transplant, and 100 organ procurements, including five multi-organ donations, offering new opportunities for life to numerous patients.
Currently, HGMEL has a workforce of 7,300 employees, including 850 health professionals and 2,400 nurses, all dedicated to the care of the life and health of patients. The team's 79 researchers produce more than 200 annual publications, contributing to the advancement of medical knowledge.
Regarding innovation, HGMEL remains at the technological forefront with equipment such as angiographers for cardiac emergencies and a hybrid operating room that allows for the simultaneous execution of complex procedures.
